WM Housing is continuing its commitment to developing high-quality affordable homes in the west midlands after completing the region’s first zero-carbon affordable homes funded by a government grant.
In January we launched the west midlands’ first affordable homes built to Code Level 6, using Homes & Communities Agency (HCA) funding, as part of a £17.1m regeneration project.
These homes are part of the final phase of a 172 home development at Groveley Park in Northfield, Birmingham, built on the former Nimmings Farm Estate. The six year project has attracted £8.5m from the HCA.
Energy-saving techniques within the build include photovoltaic panels which generate electricity, rainwater recycling for flushing toilets, mechanical ventilation which recycles waste heat from kitchen and bathroom areas, eco-efficient boilers which recycle exhaust heat and improved insulation.
Development project manager Nick Edge said: “These first two zero carbon homes are a great example of the future of affordable housing. Not only are we providing high quality housing for residents but we have shown that there are many innovative ways that we can help residents save money and improve their quality of life.”
In Herefordshire we have completed the county’s first housing scheme to be built to Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) level four.
Queen’s Meadow, in Wigmore, is a £1.8m development of 14 homes which have all been let through a local lettings plan, which gives priority to people with links to the village.
