A £360m housing redevelopment in Coventry, which is one of the biggest regeneration projects in the west midlands, has seen the first residents move into new affordable rented homes.
The regeneration of Spirit Quarters neighbourhood in north east Coventry, will see approximately 3,000 new homes built over 15 years, affecting the lives of around 7,000 residents.
This major regeneration scheme is a partnership between Whitefriars Housing, Coventry City Council, Coventry New Deal for Communities, Moat House Community Trust, Bovis Homes, Keepmoat Homes, Westbury Partnerships, the Homes and Communities Agency and Advantage West Midlands.
£5.9m of investment from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) enabled builders to commence work on the first 154 homes, a mix of mainly two, three and four bedroom houses and apartments. Thirty-nine of these will be available at affordable rent from Whitefriars Housing Group with the remainder offered for sale by developers Bovis Homes, Keepmoat Homes and Persimmon Homes. The first 154 homes are due to be completed by the end of 2011.
In addition to building homes, work is also taking place to improve the local environment, including the construction of new roads, shops, green spaces and play areas. Plus, a new broad spectrum school, Castle Wood School has opened its doors.
