Smart meters are the new generations of gas and electricity meters that give households greater visibility of their energy use. Smart meters are going to replace old energy meters in all British homes by 2020.

Your energy supplier may already have installed a smart meter in your home. If you have a smart meter, your supplier will have given you a monitor call an In Home Display (IHD). This monitor allows you to see how much energy you’re using in real time, and what it’s costing you, in pounds and pence. An IHD is a great tool to help you track and control your energy use –and from there take steps to save both energy and money.

SMART-UP is a new European project offering UK households free information and advice on how to get the most out of their smart meter to control their energy use and potentially save money on their energy bills.

The project is led in the UK by National Energy Action, a national charity that helps households to stay safe and warm in their homes. It is supported by housing associations including WM Housing Group.

If you agree to participate in the project you will receive free personalised energy and smart meter advice from a WM Housing Group staff member. This advice, along with easy to understand information leaflets, will help you to use your smart meter and In Home Display to better control your energy use. A friendly WM Housing Group staff member will also give you tips on how to save energy around the home. The advice session will take no longer than one hour and can be provided in-home or in a group setting.

Households who participate in the project will be asked to complete a ‘before’ and an ‘after’ questionnaire. The ‘before’ questionnaire will be completed with the WM Housing Group staff member at the advice visit and the ‘after’ questionnaire will be emailed or mailed out to households 6 to12 months after the advice visit. Both questionnaires will ask you some simple questions about your energy use. Households who complete the ‘before’ questionnaire will be entered into a draw to win one of many prizes, including a £200 shopping voucher.

This project is open to households with smart meters only. If you’re not sure whether you have a smart meter, contact your energy supplier.

If you don’t have a smart meter and are interested in getting one please contact your energy supplier. Depending on which supplier you use and the type of property you live in it may not be possible to fit one straight away. However, all suppliers will eventually be required to offer these to their customers.
