Callum Klapatyj, supported intern at Whitefriars Housing, was recently awarded Champion Volunteer 2018 for his contribution to local community radio station, Hillz FM.
Callum joined our Property Services compliance team in Coventry in September when he was already a well-established member of the Hillz FM team. He is currently working at Whitefriars as part of the Supported Internship scheme run in partnership with Hereward College to help young people with disabilities into work.
It all started when Hereward College arranged work experience for Callum at the radio station in January. Callum enjoyed it so much that he wanted to continue with his interest in radio and he was successfully selected to be a volunteer presenter for his own football show, which airs on a Friday evening.
Working alongside Hillz FM presenters, Leroy Muchono and Nadia Taghi, Callum pre-records his show on a Thursday and regularly invites friends along to join in with the discussions. He also highlights any upcoming events and has enthusiastically taken part on other shows, including their Irish music show, ‘Hands Across the Water’.
During the summer, when Callum was not at Hereward College, Callum studied a six-week course organised by Hillz FM to gain the skills in radio presenting. He has also been a very active member of community events in the local Hillfields area.
For all his hard work and dedication at Hillz FM, Callum was presented with the Champion Volunteer 2018 trophy and certificate on the 13th November by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Coventry, Linda Bigham.
Callum said “Hillz FM is a fantastic starting point for anybody who is interested in radio. I’m delighted at winning this award and very proud to receive recognition of what I’ve achieved. I’ve dedicated my award to Hereward College to show my appreciation of the support the College has given to me. Hillz FM is a brilliant place to work and special thanks to Leroy, Nadia and the producers for their continued support.”
Callum’s manager, Leanne Cooke, said: “It has been lovely to see Callum win this award. Working at Hillz FM has given him a huge confidence boost, which he has brought with him to WM and you can see he is keen to learn and develop his skills. It’s great to have him as part of the team.”
Youth workers and Hillz FM presenters, Nadia Taghi and Leroy Muchono were also very pleased to see Callum win this award. Nadia said: “I am so happy that Callum won this award, I feel that he has come a very long way since his work placement and has shown exceptional commitment to Hillz FM. He has gone above and beyond and exceeded my expectations as a student. It’s so lovely to see how much this award has boosted his confidence and belief in himself.”
Leroy said: “I can’t even begin to express how proud I am of Callum. He has worked so hard over the past year and it has been a true joy to see him grow. We are all pleased that Callum was able to volunteer as part of this project and get the recognition he truly deserves. I wish him every success in the future.”
