HomeWorks volunteers give Birmingham park a makeover

Hurst Green Park in Halesowen, Birmingham, has been given a fresh coat of paint with thanks to a team of HomeWorks volunteers.

Repairs Supervisor, Jon Weston, had the idea to help with the makeover when he attended a local meeting for Friends of Hurst Green Park and an appeal was made for volunteers to paint the play area.

Jon is a member of the group and as Family Optima have around 200 properties in the area, he approached the HomeWorks team to see if there was anything he could do to help. HomeWorks agreed and donated £200 to pay for equipment and materials from Dulux Trade. Jon then organised a team of trade operatives and office staff to paint the park on Saturday 29th September.

Jon Weston, Repairs Supervisor, said: “I have been an active member of the volunteer group friends of Hurst Green Park since moving back into the area last year. At one of our committee meetings the chair was asking for volunteers to paint the park. At that point I had a light bulb moment.

“I firstly asked David Polhill if HomeWorks would be able to supply any funds for materials. It was agreed by Steve Kirk to donate £200 towards paint brushes, paint kettles and more from Dulux. I then sent out an e-mail out to the staff at HomeWorks Birmingham and I had nine volunteers for the date.

“I can honestly say what a credit these guys are to WM Housing and HomeWorks – living the values that we work by.”

Mrs Carol Hackett, Chair of The Friends of Hurst Green Park said: “A massive thank you to all the volunteers who gave up their Saturday to carry out the works – the team of guys and gals were brilliant, and it was a pleasure to work alongside them all. They worked relentlessly.”

“The donation of £200 for materials to help with the painting of the play area equipment, benches and fencing was a great boost for the community who use the park.

“The area is bright and outstanding once again, and welcoming, along with our newly installed see–saw, Charlie Plane, donated from using Central England Co-operative funding.

“A special thank you to Jon Weston for organising this event and for recruiting such wonderful staff to do the works. They are all a credit to WM Housing.

“You are all welcome to visit the park any time and enjoy the oasis of green space.”
