It’s National Apprenticeship Week!

Did you know that we have apprentices working throughout the Group?

We’ve been recruiting apprentice’s for years, with many joining the Group as permanent members of staff after completing their apprenticeship.

Currently, we have eight apprentices working across the Group in our Homeworks; Finance and ICT Teams.

National Apprenticeship Week encourages employers and apprentices to come together to celebrate the success of apprenticeships, encouraging more people to choose apprenticeships as a pathway to a great career.

To mark the occasion, we’re sharing the stories of people throughout the Group who joined as an apprentice and haven’t looked back since!

Alice Sale

Alice Sale started as an apprentice in the HR Team in October 2017. Alice was an apprentice for 15 months before securing a HR Assistant role earlier this year.

Alice says: “My experience as an apprentice was great. The Group have been so supportive throughout my apprenticeship and allowed me to gain the experience needed to do a CIPD Level 3 Human Resources Qualification.

“I would definitely recommend becoming an apprentice. I remember being in sixth form and attending the careers fair where I met colleagues throughout the Group for the first time. I knew I wanted to be a part of it so I waited for an apprenticeship that interested me to be advertised.

“The whole process ran smoothly and made the beginning of my career really enjoyable!”

Aran Hunjan

Aran started his apprenticeship with us in August 2007, three weeks after leaving secondary school at the age of 16. He initially joined the Business Support Unit within the HomeWorks team.

After being an apprentice for 18 months, Aran successfully secured a role as a Clerical Assistant within the Complaints Team.

He’s now been working at the Group for 12 years and has held numerous roles, currently working in the Information Communications Technology (ICT) Team as an Information Governance Officer, managing all aspects of data protection and information governance.

Aran says: “I would recommend being an apprentice to anyone. It is a great opportunity to get started. I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school, I had the opportunity and went for it. It’s definitely the best decision I made!

“I’ve completed several qualifications while being an apprentice and gained full time employment which has led me to where I am now.

“One of my greatest achievements was recently becoming a qualified GDPR practitioner. All my training and qualifications have been funded by the Group. It’s great they invest in staff to build knowledge and expertise.”

Zac Brotherson

Zac is a Trainee Accounting Technician who started his apprentice in August 2017. He’s been with us 19 months now and his apprenticeship is for 3 years. He has hopes of securing a permanent position in the Group.

Zac says: “I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship. Being able to experience what it would be like if I had an actual job enforces my decision on what I want to do.

“I work in finance and throughout my time here I have gained experience in different parts of finance such as creditors, corporate services and development which has given me an overview of finance as a whole.

“Familiarising myself with a working environment gave me a better idea of how to operate, organise and present myself in a business.”

Michael Lea

Michael is an ICT apprentice, joining the Group in October last year. He originally started in the Information Governance Team and is now working on the IT service desk. His apprenticeship is a year long and he’s half was through it.

Michael says: “I’m really enjoying it so far, the skills I’ve learnt will help me to gain permanent work in IT, either at the Group or in another company in the future.

“It’s a great way to gain both experience and learn at the same time. The wage for an apprentice role here is also significantly higher than similar roles elsewhere which is always a plus.

“I love gaining the hands-on experience in a workplace, rather than just reading about it.”
