School children in Coventry joined in the official street naming celebration at a new £10 million housing scheme on Wednesday 11th July, to see the unveiling of the street signs which they had all named after birds.
The new development provided by Whitefriars Housing and Signature New Homes, both part of WM Housing Group, in Pappenham Green, has been built by contractor Bouygues UK and offers 83 homes which are a mix of affordable rent, shared ownership and private sale.
With thanks to pupils from Charter Primary School, the new housing scheme has four new roads named ‘Greenfinch Road’, ‘Starling Close’, ‘Hummingbird Avenue’ and ‘Skylark Street’. Westwood Academy students were also involved in the development by completing their work experience during the build.
Nick Byrne, executive director for development at WM Housing, said: “In summer 2016, we began an ambitious journey, but together with our partners we have created a high-quality development that people will be proud to call home, and will bind a community together. Well done to the children of Charter Primary school, who have used their imaginations and come up with the fantastic street names. This is a day of celebration, the birth of a new community and the start of something truly special.”
Sally Hodge, director of careers at Westwood Academy said: “We have also been delighted to work with our partners, Bouygues and WM Housing, to secure work experience opportunities for some of our students. This has included a Year 13 student who spent a fantastic week in Solihull in the IT department of WM Housing and Year 12 and Year 10 students who have been based in the offices in Coventry. We have also recently placed a student here at the Pappenham Green site to experience a variety of trades. We are extremely grateful to staff from WM and Bouygues for giving up their time to support our students and look forward to continuing partnerships in the future.”
The homes have been built as part of the ongoing regeneration of the Canley area and are due to be completed by September. The scheme comprises of 48 homes for affordable rent which are a mix of one to four-bedroom houses and flats, plus 14 houses for shared ownership and 21 houses for outright sale; all of which offer two to three bedrooms.
This mixed tenure development is a first for WM Housing Group in the city and was funded with the support of a £2 million grant from the Homes and Communities Agency.
Whitefriars Housing, part of leading Midlands housing provider WM Housing Group, will manage the homes for rent and shared ownership while Signature New Homes, also part of WM Housing, will market the houses for outright sale.
