The winners of the WM Housing Group Employee Excellence Awards have been announced at a prestigious lunch-time award ceremony held today, Thursday 21st March, at Hampton Manor, Solihull.
The awards celebrate the fantastic achievements of staff across our organisation over the last year.
Staff were encouraged to nominate an individual or team they think has gone above and beyond to make an outstanding contribution.
We had more than 130 submissions into this year’s awards and the standard was higher than we have ever seen.
All finalists were treated to a three-course meal, a £100 gift voucher and an award memento.
Introducing you to our very worthy winners with commentary from our judging panel:
Winner: Daniel Gooding, Data Analyst
“Daniel’s approach to his work, the value of that work to our organisation and the outstanding testimony from colleagues about his qualities as a member of our team makes him a worthy winner.”
Finalists: Alice Sale, HR Assistant and Kiran Heer, HR Advisor
Manager of the Year
Winner: Danny Heffernan, CleanWorks Team Leader
“The words of Danny’s team members say it all. He is quite clearly a manager who leads and inspires his colleagues to achieve great things. For this, and for taking on so much following some serious health issues, Danny is a worthy winner and an outstanding colleague.”
Finalists: Chris Howard, Service Desk Manager and Leigh Burns, Income Recovery Team Leader.
Winners: Martin Hancox and Marie Belle, Homelessness Assistants at The Gateway
“Martin and Marie are brilliant ambassadors for our organisation and are major contributors to the fantastic service we provide at The Gateway. Their lifesaving work in the face of significant challenge is an inspiration to us all and they are tremendous assets to our organisation.”
Finalists: Aran Hunjan, Information Governance Officer and David Bellerby, Painter and Decorator
Team of the Year
Winner: Health and Safety Team
“The huge improvement in compliance across the organisation would have been reason enough for the people in this team to be recognised and the RoSPA Diamond Award in our official audit sealed the deal. The health and safety of our colleagues is our number one priority and this award recognises the work of those involved in making this happen, making a huge difference right across the organisation.”
Finalists: Anti-social Behaviour Team – Hillfields; Development, Sales and Regeneration Team and Manor Farm GreenWorks Team.
Employee of the Year
Winner: Karen Bowe, Community Scheme Worker
“Karen’s willingness to step in and go the distance is quite remarkable. The way that she handled a very difficult incident at one of the schemes she manages was outstanding and her colleagues and residents were unanimous in their praise.”
Finalists: Kaz Rai, Building Surveyor and Rachel Slater, Safer Neighbourhoods Officer.
Winner: Sally Thompson, Regulation Officer
“Sally’s incredible length of service and the warm words so many colleagues have to say about her make her a worthy winner of our Lifetime Achievement Award. People like Sally play a crucial role in our organisation.”
Finalists: Emma Matthews, HR Business Partner and Pat Donaldson, PA to the Director of Housing.

“The submissions we had and the quality of our finalists demonstrates just how many fantastic people we have doing outstanding work in our organisation.
“From unsung heroes to fantastic teams, the work of our finalists demonstrates both passion, commitment and bravery.
“Whatever their role, the people that work in our teams make a very real contribution to help people in our communities get and maintain one of the most important things they will ever have – a home.
“Being able to work with such fantastic people all striving to achieve this makes me very proud”.
